The first one that hasn't knocked my socks off。 There's a lot of pay-off but that's left me weirdly leery of what's to come。 Still great story telling, excellent horror, scary, creepy and in this volume, nutso world and mythology-building。 Little out there like it。 The first one that hasn't knocked my socks off。 There's a lot of pay-off but that's left me weirdly leery of what's to come。 Still great story telling, excellent horror, scary, creepy and in this volume, nutso world and mythology-building。 Little out there like it。 。。。more

KRITCH KRITCH。I think I was partly expecting this series to get lost along the way, but instead it seems quite determined to come to some sort of conclusion。 I don't expect too many answers, and at times it seems a little blunt, but its certainly evocative and I'm keen to see where they'll take us next。 KRITCH KRITCH。I think I was partly expecting this series to get lost along the way, but instead it seems quite determined to come to some sort of conclusion。 I don't expect too many answers, and at times it seems a little blunt, but its certainly evocative and I'm keen to see where they'll take us next。 。。。more

Gideon Falls, Volume 4: The Pentoculus by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino (Illustrator) is the first good look at Pentoculus Machine that's in the center of the Black Barn。 It's also the first explanation of why the characters we've been following have been drawn to the barn。The rapid spread of COVID in 2020 delayed the release of volume 4 to the point that my pre-order was canceled, not by the book store, but by their distributor。 Since neither of us realized what had happened until months la Gideon Falls, Volume 4: The Pentoculus by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino (Illustrator) is the first good look at Pentoculus Machine that's in the center of the Black Barn。 It's also the first explanation of why the characters we've been following have been drawn to the barn。The rapid spread of COVID in 2020 delayed the release of volume 4 to the point that my pre-order was canceled, not by the book store, but by their distributor。 Since neither of us realized what had happened until months later when I saw volume 5 had been released, I've fallen way behind in my reading of this series。For Volume 3: Stations of the Cross I looked at how the protagonists were set up in a scarecrow (protector) / minotaur (monster) dichotomy。 For this volume their status is downgraded as their roles in a greater destiny is established。 This move also drops the series solidly into horror, although it's been skirting that genre throughout the previous volumes。http://pussreboots。com/blog/2021/comm。。。PrivilegedtRuraltLabyrintht003399 。。。more

I continue to love the art, my only minor complaint is that it's a bit too photo-reference-y sometimes。 But overall it's great to look at, visceral and creepy。 Good dialog, good story。 It has a problem that bothers me, though: when writers have characters be vague or omit information that no real person would, only to preserve the tension or mystery in the story。 I continue to love the art, my only minor complaint is that it's a bit too photo-reference-y sometimes。 But overall it's great to look at, visceral and creepy。 Good dialog, good story。 It has a problem that bothers me, though: when writers have characters be vague or omit information that no real person would, only to preserve the tension or mystery in the story。 。。。more

I guess every horror-genre graphic novel devolves into the Walking Dead at some point。 Sad。 The interesting thing about the demonic is not how good it is at achieving a body count。

The challenge with good, weird mysteries is that they have to be explained, and this one starts to reveal its layers while still crashing through a climax, so it never slows down and all the strange evil of its world and characters radiate as capable and persistent, thus the adventure barrels along like a car down a woodland hill, whipping through the evening forest。

Revelations continue apace, and the story continues to expand outward exponentially, which is what keeps me going。 Where I struggle is with the dialogue, which is mostly stale and sometimes overtly bad, and the characters, who are mostly interchangeable ciphers, defined only by their role。 A few of the new additions are meant to lend comic relief (and perhaps offer up some personality), but their dialogue felt even weaker and devolved to terrible cliches。 I’ll keep reading for the plot, but inte Revelations continue apace, and the story continues to expand outward exponentially, which is what keeps me going。 Where I struggle is with the dialogue, which is mostly stale and sometimes overtly bad, and the characters, who are mostly interchangeable ciphers, defined only by their role。 A few of the new additions are meant to lend comic relief (and perhaps offer up some personality), but their dialogue felt even weaker and devolved to terrible cliches。 I’ll keep reading for the plot, but interest is waning。 。。。more

Increasingly this series makes me think that comics as an artform are uniquely suited to handling parallel worlds。 Not just because you can chuck 50 alternate versions of Superman into one big panel or whatever, though obviously that sort of thing laid the groundwork。 But for the way panels representing different worlds can hang there in parallel on the page, without it feeling tricksy like it would in prose, or needing to move eventually as it must on screen。 The way something horrible can emer Increasingly this series makes me think that comics as an artform are uniquely suited to handling parallel worlds。 Not just because you can chuck 50 alternate versions of Superman into one big panel or whatever, though obviously that sort of thing laid the groundwork。 But for the way panels representing different worlds can hang there in parallel on the page, without it feeling tricksy like it would in prose, or needing to move eventually as it must on screen。 The way something horrible can emerge from the gutters between panels, really catching that sense of an intrusion from Outside, another direction at which the characters can't even point。 Even the way sound effects and backgrounds can merge, like some nightmarish music of the spheres。 The story underneath all this is an effective if not terribly radical horror yarn, but in horror maybe more than any other genre, you don't necessarily need a new tale so long as the way you tell it gets under the skin, and boy does Gideon Falls manage that。 I believe a screen version is in the works, but I struggle to see how it can be anything like as unsettling as the original。 。。。more

Bonus points for the art, but this story is just too difficult and too absurd for me to follow。 I like Lemire’s work, but this is way to out there for me to continue on to book 4。 Two stars is too low, but I would probably put this at a 2。5。

The threads of the tale are coming together now, and the horror is more deeply visceral than ever。

Gideon Falls Volume 4 is jam packed with action and I love it。The story is moving forward to an epic conclusion which makes me happy to know that things are wrapping up。 Nothing I hate more than a graphic novel series' that drags on or takes forever to end。 Volume 4 is filled with some downright scary as hell artwork。 The bloody smiley face literally scares the hell out of me each and every time。 Gideon Falls continues to be one of the best horror stories I've ever read in my life and trust me w Gideon Falls Volume 4 is jam packed with action and I love it。The story is moving forward to an epic conclusion which makes me happy to know that things are wrapping up。 Nothing I hate more than a graphic novel series' that drags on or takes forever to end。 Volume 4 is filled with some downright scary as hell artwork。 The bloody smiley face literally scares the hell out of me each and every time。 Gideon Falls continues to be one of the best horror stories I've ever read in my life and trust me when I say I love my horror stories。 Bring on Volume 5! 。。。more

This is an interesting series, though the wait between volumes is making it even harder to follow just what the heck is going on。 Might be a good one to read from start to finished, uninterrupted, once it's all collected。 The artwork is just outstanding。。。 This is an interesting series, though the wait between volumes is making it even harder to follow just what the heck is going on。 Might be a good one to read from start to finished, uninterrupted, once it's all collected。 The artwork is just outstanding。。。 。。。more
